Visual or written schedule – to support the learning of transitions and functional routines. Communication book between home and school – to facilitate communication between staff and parents about daily activities and events, and to help track progress or concerns over time. Visual timer or timer for transitions – to support learning of expected transitions or routines. Mini schedules – small portable schedule used for transitioning between activities or rooms. Written or visual prompting of directions or rules – to supplement verbal directions in order to facilitate greater understanding of directions or rules. Sound amplification system – a local wireless broadcast system that consists of a microphone and transmitter for the speaker and “Walkman like” receivers with headphones for listeners with hearing impairments or attention disorders Visuals to support communication and all auditorally presented instructions/information Social Stories- to help the understanding of interpersonal communication, prepare student for social interactions and public events Use of transition object- to support students, often on the Autism spectrum, transition from one activity to another. Example: hand student a token before every transition to indicate transition is happening, student takes token to next activity Portable picture schedule book- used to support students outside of the classroom Portable picture communication book-used to support students outside of the classroom. IE: out in the community, on the playground, at lunch Picture communication choice boards- visual support for student making choices. Used during free time, to pick out lunch, choose next activity etc. Visual/picture supports- support student in a schedule from beginning to end. Breaks down step by step. Collection of pictures and/or symbols. Voice output communication aid (VOCA)- supports students who are unable to speak or whose speech is unintelligible. Student can generate speech through synthesized speech. Social narratives/video modeling- supports students to learn expected behaviors through watching video demonstration and then imitation the desired behavior. Access to SGD- Speech generating device, also known as VOCA, electronic system used to supplement or replace speech or writing for individuals with severe speech impairments, enabling them to verbally communicate their needs Photos/line drawing for communication- to quickly support communication in the moment with quick drawings or picture representation Sign language/conventional gesture program- used to support communication through body language, manual communication, gestures to convey meanings Communication wallet- accessory to support student communicating wants and needs Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)- picture system used to teach functional communication skills with initial focus on spontaneous communication. Visual dictionary - to support staff in engaging with blind students communicative efforts, displaying familiar request and responses using a multi-modal system for communication including ASL signs, gestures, vocalizations, and body movements Tangible Object Choice Bank - a binder with tangible object symbols, which represent activity or item choices, and used in exchanges when selecting preferred and non-preferred activities. Tangible Object Schedule - a binder with tangible object symbols which represent scheduled activities/places, used during the school day Tactile calendar - to support learning of temporal concepts, with words, colors, and Braille media. Access to multi-modal communication system and items - This may include a variety of objects, picture icons, or sensory items and switches, to be used to facilitate interaction with others, and participate in games and activities Eye gaze board/frame- to support communication using students direct stare at a board with pictures/numbers or letters to generate a message |
